The Evolution of Smart Eyewear: Meta's Latest Announcement

Report: Meta to Add Displays to Ray Ban Smart Glasses in 2025

Meta is set to introduce displays to its Ray-Ban smart glasses by the second half of 2025, as reported by (The Financial Times). The second-generation smart glasses, launched in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica in November 2023, already come equipped with various AI integrations. These include features such as helping users remember parking spots and enabling the recording and sending of voice messages on popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Messenger while on the move.

Future of Meta's Smart Glasses

Despite these advancements, the $300 Ray-Ban smart glasses are not expected to transform into a fully-fledged augmented reality device like Apple's Vision Pro. The upcoming small display will primarily serve the purpose of showing notifications or responses from Meta’s virtual assistant.

The timeline for the release of Meta's augmented reality glasses – code-named Orion and revealed in September – has been expedited, but a consumer launch is still projected to be years away according to sources cited by The Financial Times.

Advancements in Mixed-Reality Features

Meta aims to incorporate mixed-reality features similar to those found in their larger Quest 3 VR headsets, but in a lightweight and stylish eyewear format. During the unveiling event, Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, pledged to deliver the "most advanced glasses that the world has ever seen".

These developments come in the midst of a growing trend in the tech industry, with companies like Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google collaborating to create mixed-reality glasses that can be tethered to smartphones. Apple is also rumored to be working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro, potentially targeting budget-conscious consumers post-2027.
