Turns out, being polite to AI might not be as necessary as we think.

I decided to stop saying "thank you" to ChatGPT to see if it made any difference.

The results were surprising.

ChatGPT Doesn’t Care About Politeness (But You Might):

When I stopped saying "thanks," ChatGPT continued to respond the same way — no hard feelings, no drop in performance. It’s designed to assist, not to judge your manners.

But here’s the twist: I felt weird. Turns out, saying "thank you" was more for me than for the AI. It’s a human habit that’s hard to break.

Efficiency vs. Etiquette:

Dropping the pleasantries made my interactions faster. No more typing "thanks" or "please" meant I could get straight to the point.

The Psychology of Politeness:

Saying "thank you" to ChatGPT might seem silly, but it reflects how we humanize technology. We treat AI like a person because it feels natural — even if it’s just a tool.

This habit says more about us than about the AI. It’s a reminder of how deeply ingrained social norms are in our behavior.

The Bigger Picture:

This experiment made me think about our relationship with AI. As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, how will our interactions evolve? Will we keep treating it like a person, or will we adapt to its true nature as a tool?

Final Thoughts:

Stopping "thanks" didn’t change ChatGPT, but it changed how I thought about AI. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how we project human traits onto technology — and how those habits shape our experience.
