Statistics on Entry-Level Job Decline
In May of this year, there were only 214,934 entry-level jobs available, marking a sharp 32% decrease from three years ago. This decline surpasses the overall reduction in job vacancies, which dropped from 1,091,909 to 858,465, a decline of 21% during the same period.
Reports from The Telegraph have highlighted the substantial impact of ChatGPT on graduate hiring, particularly affecting the professional services sector. The integration of AI technology is automating routine tasks typically assigned to junior accountants and consultants.
Challenges in Graduate Hiring
Data from jobs board Indeed indicates a significant drop in graduate job postings by Britain's major accountancy firms. The Big Four firms have collectively reduced their graduate recruitment, with KPMG cutting its scheme by 29% and Deloitte by 18%.
According to Adzuna, graduate job openings saw a 4.2% decrease in May, with a 28.4% decline from the previous year. This marks the lowest level of graduate hiring since July 2020, painting a bleak outlook for young job seekers.
The Future of Entry-Level Roles
Experts express concerns that while tech companies assure the creation of new jobs through AI advancements, many traditional office and technical positions are becoming redundant. Goldman Sachs estimates that AI could potentially replace 300 million jobs, further emphasizing the transformative impact of this technology.
