Meta AI Training Opt-Out
Starting June 26, Meta will use data from interactions on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp to train its AI models. Despite legal challenges, Meta views public data as essential for AI training. U.S. users have limited protections, with no opt-out feature available, but can set profiles to private to reduce exposure. In contrast, EU and UK residents can formally object to the use of their data through a process outlined in Meta’s privacy settings, thanks to stricter data privacy laws. The US should do a better job protecting tech platforms users, but hey, that’s for another edition. For now, every tech platform out there is using your data to improve their models and to monetize their services. Today we will show you how to opt out of some of them.
Opting Out on Facebook
If you have a Facebook account:
- Log in to your account. You can access the new privacy policy by following this link.
- Click on your account icon at the top right-hand corner. Select “Settings and privacy” and then “Privacy center.” On the left-hand side, you will see a drop-down menu labeled “How Meta uses information for generative AI models and features.” Click on that, and scroll down. Then click on “Right to object.”
- Fill in the form with your information. The form requires you to explain how Meta’s data processing affects you.
Opting Out on Instagram
If you have an Instagram account:
- Log in to your account. Go to your profile page, and click on the three lines at the top-right corner. Click on “Settings and privacy.”
- Scroll down to the “More info and support” section, and click “About.” Then click on “Privacy policy.”
- Repeat the steps mentioned above.
Gemini AI Training Opt-Out
To opt out of Gemini AI training:
- Open the Gemini app or website (gemini.google.com)
- Click on the “Activity” section
- Select the “Turn Off” drop-down menu
- Turn off the “Gemini Apps Activity” toggle
Turning off “Gemini Apps Activity” will prevent your future conversations from being used for AI training. However, it’s important to note that Google may still use some conversation data for service improvements and safety when activity is disabled.
