Using AI bots like ChatGPT could be causing cognitive decline, new study finds
A recent pre-print study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States has raised concerns about the potential negative impact of using OpenAI's ChatGPT on cognitive function. The study, carried out by researchers at the MIT Media Lab, examined the effects of relying on ChatGPT for writing tasks on cognitive performance.
Research Study Details
The researchers divided participants into three groups and assigned them the task of writing essays using either ChatGPT, a conventional search engine, or no external tools. During the essay writing process, brain scans were taken using an electroencephalogram (EEG) to monitor neural activity. Subsequently, the essays were evaluated by both human assessors and artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
The results of the study revealed that the group exclusively using ChatGPT exhibited the lowest neural activation in certain brain regions and struggled with recalling and recognizing their own writing. In contrast, the group that relied solely on their own cognitive abilities without technological assistance demonstrated higher levels of cognitive engagement and better memory retention.
Impact of ChatGPT Use
In a follow-up session, participants from the ChatGPT group were asked to complete the writing task without any external aid. The findings indicated that those who had initially used ChatGPT performed poorly compared to their peers. Their writing was described as "biased and superficial," suggesting a negative influence of ChatGPT on independent thinking and creativity.
Recommendations and Future Research
The authors of the study emphasized the need for further research to better understand how AI tools affect cognitive processes before such tools are widely accepted as beneficial for human users. It was suggested that blind reliance on AI for tasks like essay writing could lead to reduced neural, linguistic, and behavioral performance.
Overall, the study cautioned against the uncritical adoption of AI technologies like ChatGPT, as they may contribute to a decline in critical thinking, susceptibility to manipulation, and decreased creativity. The findings underscore the importance of maintaining a balance between human cognitive abilities and technological assistance in tasks that require critical thinking and creativity.
