Jocelyn Leitzinger, an instructor at the University of Illinois in Chicago, observed a concerning trend when her university students employed ChatGPT to recount instances of discrimination they had witnessed. She noted a recurring character named Sally in many narratives, suggesting ChatGPT's influence on the students' storytelling.
Leitzinger disclosed that approximately half of her 180 students in the previous semester had misused ChatGPT, including in discussions about the ethics of artificial intelligence. This revelation aligned with the recent research findings highlighting a potential link between ChatGPT usage and decreased critical thinking skills.
MIT Study on ChatGPT Usage
A team of MIT researchers conducted a study involving 54 adult students from Boston to assess the impact of ChatGPT on essay writing. The participants were divided into three groups: one group utilized ChatGPT, another used a search engine, and the third relied solely on their cognitive abilities.
The results indicated that the ChatGPT users performed significantly poorer than the brain-only group in various aspects. Brain activity measurements revealed decreased connectivity among different brain regions in ChatGPT users. Moreover, a considerable percentage of ChatGPT users struggled to recall content from their essays compared to the other groups.
