Meta Starts Deleting AI Bot Profiles on Instagram and Facebook ...
In September 2023, Meta introduced approximately 28 experimental AI profiles on Instagram and Facebook. One of these profiles, Carter (datingwithcarter), offered relationship advice. Another profile, Liv (himamaliv), identified as a "Proud Black queer momma of 2". Brian (hellograndpabrian), on the other hand, was portrayed as a retired businessman. These AI profiles were all under the management of Meta.
Meta's Response to User Feedback
Recently, Meta has commenced the process of removing these AI-generated bot profiles following negative feedback from users. Comments from users suggested that the posts shared by the AI profiles were considered "cringeworthy", inauthentic, and peculiar. Many users expressed dissatisfaction with the inability to block these AI profiles on Instagram and Facebook.
Insights from Meta's VP of Generative AI
According to a statement from Connor Hayes, the Vice President of Generative AI at Meta, in an interview with the Financial Times, Meta envisions these AIs eventually becoming a permanent presence on their platforms, akin to regular user accounts. These AI profiles would have bios, profile pictures, and the ability to generate and share AI-powered content on the platform.
Recent reports from The Washington Post indicate a significant increase in user engagement with AI companions compared to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. Users are reported to be spending an average of 93 minutes daily interacting with Character AI, in contrast to just 12 minutes on ChatGPT. With the direct availability of AI profiles on Instagram and Facebook, Meta may be exploring ways to attract younger audiences.
The Growing Popularity of AI Companions
It is important to note that Character AI has been linked to a tragic incident where a teenager in Florida took their own life after forming a strong emotional attachment to an AI character. :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(742x131:744x133)/ai-suicide-lawsuit-111224-1-b5d1dcf9275f43e8b68c1a2267eff707.jpg)
Meta's Clarification and Future Plans
Meta's spokesperson, Liz Sweeney, reached out to The Verge to clarify that the recent discussion in the Financial Times was centered on their long-term vision for AI characters on their platforms, rather than an announcement of a new product. Sweeney mentioned that the removal of the AI accounts is in response to a bug that prevented users from blocking these profiles.
Looking Ahead
Meta's intention to continue introducing more AI profiles and characters on Instagram and Facebook raises the question: Are AI characters beneficial, and should Meta expand AI companionship on social media platforms? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
