Key Updates at Google I/O 2024

During the annual developer conference Google I/O 2024, Google unveiled significant updates for Gemini (previously known as Bard). One of the major announcements was the rollout of the YouTube Music Gemini Extension to the public. This extension empowers users to manage YouTube Music within the chatbot interface, enhancing its functionality.

Users can access the YouTube Music Gemini Extension by visiting gemini.google.com/extensions on their device. Once connected, users can leverage the YouTube Music library and respond to music-related commands. It's important to note that the extension currently supports only English commands.

Enhanced Functionality

Similar to other chatbots, users can provide basic instructions such as "Play Arjit Singh on your device" to initiate background music. iOS users can fulfill this request by accessing the YouTube Music application. In response to commands, Gemini displays relevant information like cover image, artist details, duration, and play count.

Users can also perform specific searches like finding "Channa Mereya by Arjit Singh" and the chatbot will locate the track accordingly. Additionally, users have the ability to pause, resume, stop, skip, or restart tracks using voice commands, enabling a hands-free music interaction experience.

Additional Features and Limitations

Users can interact further with the chatbot by issuing commands such as "Play music that I like" or "Show some rock music," which will play the user's "Liked Music" playlist. However, PC support for the feature is currently incomplete.

9To5Google reported that users attempting to search for a song might encounter an error message indicating that Gemini is unable to play the file on PCs, but it can provide a YouTube link as an alternative.
