OpenAI CEO Responds to ChatGPT Users Creating Studio Ghibli-Inspired Images
The latest release of OpenAI’s image generation technology has caused a surge of users on social media sharing images transformed in the style of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio.
OpenAI recently launched its most advanced image generator in GPT‑4o, featuring a natively multimodal model capable of producing precise, accurate, and photorealistic outputs.

Response from OpenAI CEO
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, joined the conversation surrounding this viral trend in a post on X, where he acknowledged being Studio Ghibli-fied. Altman humorously described the experience and even changed his profile picture to a Ghibli-style image.
While representatives for Studio Ghibli in North America refrained from commenting, Studio Ghibli's co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, has previously expressed strong disapproval of AI-generated animation, citing it as an insult to life itself.
Concerns and Legal Issues
There have been growing concerns within the creative industry regarding the use of AI to replicate copyrighted works. OpenAI and other AI companies have faced objections from Hollywood actors and creatives who fear the weakening or elimination of protections on copyrighted works for training AI systems.

In a recent development, a federal judge ruled that the New York Times and other newspaper groups are allowed to proceed with a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, aiming to halt the use of their content to train chatbots like ChatGPT.
Community Response
On social media platforms, users have been sharing various Ghibli-style images created by OpenAI’s new image generator, showcasing the capabilities of this technology.
