WhatsApp Introduces Meta AI-Powered Message Summaries to Catch Up on Unread Texts
WhatsApp has recently introduced a new feature called Message Summaries, powered by Meta AI, to help users catch up on their unread messages. This AI-backed feature leverages Meta AI technology and is designed to summarize messages efficiently.
One of the key aspects of this new feature is Private Processing, which ensures that the messages are summarized without being read by anyone else in the chat, including Meta. Users also have the option to use Advanced Chat Privacy to select specific texts for summarization.
How Message Summaries Work
According to a blog post by WhatsApp, Message Summaries are presented in a bulleted list format in individual and group chats. When users tap on the "Unread messages" icon in a chat, they can view the condensed message window, which is labeled as "visible only to you" and is protected by Private Processing.
This innovative approach allows Meta AI to generate message summaries without compromising the privacy of the user's data. The system ensures that neither the chatbot nor WhatsApp can access the actual message content or the AI-generated summaries.

Rollout and Expansion
Initially, Message Summaries are being rolled out to users in the US in the English language. However, the feature is expected to expand to include more languages and regions later this year, as per Meta, WhatsApp's parent company.
Meta emphasizes that Private Processing, the underlying technology behind Message Summaries, is built on the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). This secure computing infrastructure enables users to interact with the AI chatbot in a private cloud environment, ensuring confidentiality and data security.
Security Measures
Private Processing is designed with three foundational requirements to enhance security:
- Confidential Processing: Preventing unauthorized access to user data during processing or transit
- Enforceable Guarantees: Shutting down operations in case of security threats
- Verifiable Transparency: Allowing auditing of Private Processing for security verification
In addition to these foundational requirements, non-targetability and stateless processing are integral aspects of Private Processing on WhatsApp, ensuring users' privacy and security.
