Meta Platforms to use Reuters news content in AI chatbot - Technology
Meta Platforms announced on Friday that its artificial intelligence chatbot will now utilize Reuters content to provide real-time answers to user inquiries regarding news and current events. This partnership marks the latest collaboration between a major technology company and a prominent news publisher.
Neither Meta nor Reuters' parent company Thomson Reuters disclosed the financial specifics of this agreement. However, this marks Meta's first news-related deal in quite some time. The collaboration comes amidst Meta's efforts to reduce news content on its platforms following criticisms from regulators and publishers regarding misinformation and revenue-sharing disputes.
AI Integration
Meta AI, the chatbot developed by Meta Platforms, is accessible across various services such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. It remains unclear whether Meta intends to use Reuters content for training its expansive language model.
A Reuters spokesperson confirmed the partnership, stating, "We can confirm that Reuters has partnered with tech providers to license our trusted, fact-based news content to power their AI platforms. The terms of these deals remain confidential."
Compensation and Functionality
According to a report by Axios, Reuters will receive compensation under a multi-year agreement for providing access to its journalism through Meta's platforms. Through this collaboration, Meta AI will be able to respond to news-related queries by offering summaries and directing users to relevant Reuters content.
Other tech companies, such as OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, and Perplexity, a startup backed by Jeff Bezos, have also formed similar AI partnerships with news outlets. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, will introduce a new tool called 'Self-Taught Evaluator' that leverages AI to verify the accuracy of responses generated by AI systems.
This latest development adds to the existing fact-checking partnership between Reuters and Meta, which was initiated in 2020.
