OpenAI plans to integrate the video generator tool 'Sora' into ChatGPT
OpenAI has announced its intention to integrate the AI video generation tool called Sora into ChatGPT. Currently, Sora functions as a standalone web application that enables users to generate short video clips from text prompts. By integrating Sora into ChatGPT, users will have the convenience of producing videos without the need to switch between different platforms, thus streamlining the content creation process. This integration is expected to democratize video production, making it more accessible to a wider audience beyond professional studios and creatives.
Challenges and Opportunities
However, there is a trade-off involved. The integrated version of Sora within ChatGPT may offer fewer editing tools compared to the standalone Sora application. This adjustment aligns with OpenAI's objective of preserving the user-friendly interface of ChatGPT while introducing new functionalities. It is worth noting that ChatGPT already supports image generation through OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model.
Future Developments
OpenAI has not provided a specific timeline for the integration of Sora into ChatGPT. In parallel, the company is exploring the possibility of developing a standalone mobile app for Sora and working on an image generator powered by Sora, potentially delivering more realistic images to users.
Introduced last year in February 2024, Sora has the capability to create videos up to 1080p resolution, 20 seconds in length, and in various aspect ratios (widescreen, vertical, or square). The videos generated by Sora exhibit detailed scenes, intricate camera movements, and multiple characters displaying vivid emotions. The tool encompasses functionalities such as text-to-video conversion, video editing, video sampling, and video framing.

Currently, Sora is accessible to ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) and Pro ($200 per month) subscribers in various regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. This initiative comes at a time when ChatGPT has surpassed 400 million weekly active users in February 2025, following a milestone of 300 million users in December of the previous year.

Amidst the competitive landscape, with offerings like Adobe's Firefly Video model and Google's Veo 2 model, OpenAI has upgraded Sora with new features. The text-to-video AI model now includes an updated video feed categorized as 'Best' and 'Top,' where the 'Top' section likely showcases videos based on user engagement metrics to help users discover trending AI-generated videos more efficiently.
Furthermore, OpenAI has granted ChatGPT Plus subscribers unlimited access to Sora through a 'relaxed queue' feature. Although ChatGPT Plus subscribers are typically limited to 50 video generations per month, this feature temporarily removes that restriction by queuing videos for creation during periods of low server load.
