OpenAI releases text-to-video model Sora for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users

The introduction of Sora follows OpenAI's successful launch of the ChatGPT chatbot in November 2022, which sparked widespread interest in generative AI. With this new offering, OpenAI aims to compete with similar text-to-video tools developed by Meta, Google, and Stability AI's Stable Video Diffusion.

The Sora AI model was initially unveiled in February, with access limited to safety testers during its research preview phase. Now, ChatGPT Plus and Pro users can leverage Sora Turbo at no extra cost. OpenAI plans to introduce tailored pricing for different user segments in the near future.

Users of Sora will have the capability to create videos with resolutions of up to 1080p, lasting up to 20 seconds, and in various aspect ratios including widescreen, vertical, or square. While Sora is not yet accessible in EU countries, Switzerland, and the UK, it will be available in regions where ChatGPT is currently active.

OpenAI has also implemented safeguards within Sora to prevent the creation and dissemination of harmful content, such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes. Initially, uploads featuring people will be restricted, with plans to expand this functionality once deepfake mitigations have been further developed.
