South Korean mobile carrier SK Telecom to open AI data center with Nvidia GPUs
SK Telecom, Korea's leading mobile carrier, has announced its plans to open an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in December. The data center will be utilizing Nvidia's graphic processing units (GPU) and will be a collaboration with U.S. GPU cloud provider Lambda. This move is part of SK Telecom's efforts to expand its AI infrastructure business.
The AI data center will be located in Seoul and SK Telecom aims to transform its existing data center into the country's largest GPU farm. The company plans to increase the total GPU units to thousands over the next three years. Additionally, Lambda will establish its first Asia-Pacific region in Korea and SK Telecom will introduce a GPU-as-a-Service model based on Lambda's GPU resources.
Expanding AI Infrastructure Business
Earlier this year, SK Telecom made significant investments in the AI sector, including $20 million in Lambda and $200 million in AI data center solutions company Smart Global Holdings. These investments underscore SK Telecom's commitment to growing its presence in the AI industry.
SK Telecom's CEO Ryu Young-sang expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are excited to collaborate with Lambda to bring cutting-edge AI technology to Korea. By leveraging Nvidia GPUs, we aim to enhance our capabilities in AI data processing and drive innovation in this field."
With the increasing demand for AI technologies, SK Telecom's initiative to establish an AI data center equipped with Nvidia GPUs is expected to bolster the company's position as a key player in the AI market.
