Sisters save thousands by using ChatGPT for DIY home renovations
Two sisters, Heather Roberts, 25, and Anya Hughes, 21, embarked on a remarkable journey of renovating their first apartment, which they purchased for $178,686 in May 2024. By leveraging DIY skills acquired from platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and even ChatGPT, the duo managed to save a whopping $10,204 on renovation costs.
Empowering Women Through DIY
Heather, a barista and HR admin worker, and Anya, a university student, took on the major task of completely revamping the interior of their apartment. Despite lacking prior experience, the sisters were determined to showcase that women can excel in DIY projects without compromising their femininity.
Heather shared, “We rolled up our sleeves and dove into the project. We documented our journey on TikTok, aiming to inspire other young women to embrace DIY projects and break stereotypes."
From Humble Beginnings to a Massive Project
What initially seemed like a simple renovation project soon turned into a mammoth task as the sisters realized the extent of work needed. Heather mentioned, "We started working on it, and everything started to fall apart. It was such a huge project."
Despite facing challenges, including a porch that was on the brink of collapse, the sisters persevered. With Heather investing 30 hours a week and Anya contributing around 10 hours amidst her university commitments, the duo made significant progress.
Saving Costs and Seeking Online Guidance
By taking charge of most tasks themselves, Heather and Anya estimate that they saved approximately $10,204 on renovation expenses. They turned to online resources like TikTok for practical tips and tricks, even consulting ChatGPT for guidance on various DIY aspects.
Heather emphasized, "We found valuable insights on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Whenever we faced a challenge, we sought assistance from ChatGPT, given our lack of familial expertise in construction."
Gratitude for Support and Collaboration
Throughout their renovation journey, the sisters received helpful suggestions from online followers and tradespeople. Brands like Brewers paint and decorators, Tile Warehouse, and Brandon Hire Station extended support by providing essential supplies and equipment.
As they near the completion of their apartment renovation, Heather expressed her aspirations of pursuing house flipping as a full-time venture. The sisters share their progress on social media platforms under the handle @builtinpink and continue to inspire others with their DIY achievements.
