Scale AI Alexandr Wang to Join Meta in $14.3 Billion Deal

According to a CNBC report, Meta is making a significant investment of $14.3 billion in Scale AI and is welcoming its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to enhance the artificial intelligence initiatives of the tech giant.

In a memo addressed to the staff and shared on X, Wang confirmed his departure from Scale AI. However, he mentioned that he would continue to be a part of the board as a director to assist the company in achieving its long-term objectives. Wang acknowledged that such opportunities often come with sacrifices, and in this case, it meant his departure from the company.

Leadership Transition

Jason Droege, who currently holds the position of Scale AI's chief strategy officer, will be stepping into the role of CEO. Droege brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously served as a VP at Uber and as a venture partner at Benchmark.

As part of the deal, several employees from Scale AI will also be making the transition to Meta. This strategic partnership grants Meta a 49% stake in Scale AI, albeit without any voting rights, as confirmed by a Scale AI spokesperson.

Enhancing AI Capabilities

A spokesperson from Meta has verified the collaboration, highlighting the plans for both companies to strengthen their collaboration on AI training data. Additionally, Wang will be joining Meta's team that is dedicated to superintelligence. More detailed information regarding this partnership will be disclosed in the coming weeks.

Wang's appointment aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision to fortify Meta's AI capabilities in the face of stiff competition from entities like OpenAI and Alphabet. Despite Meta's prior reliance on longstanding team members, Zuckerberg identified Wang as the ideal candidate to lead these crucial endeavors, particularly following a lukewarm reception to Meta's latest Llama AI model, as reported by CNBC.

Key Industry Partnerships

Scale AI, a significant partner of Meta, also caters to other tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The company has emphasized that Meta will not receive access to any proprietary data or business information from Scale AI's clients.
