Samsung ready to take on Meta Ray-Ban glasses with its smart glasses
It looks like Samsung is gearing up to enter the smart glasses market with a highly anticipated release in late 2025. Developed in collaboration with tech giants Google and Qualcomm, Samsung's smart glasses are set to bring some impressive features to the table.
Anticipated Specifications
The latest report from the Korean Maeil Business Newspaper sheds light on what consumers can expect from Samsung's upcoming smart glasses. The initial production run is slated to include 500,000 units, with a targeted release date in Q3 2025, between the months of July and September.
These smart glasses are reported to be powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip and will boast a 155mAh battery, all while maintaining a lightweight design at just 50 grams. Additionally, the device will feature a 12MP Sony camera and a custom Gemini LLM developed in partnership with Google.
Comparison with Ray-Ban Meta Glasses
Many of the specifications of Samsung's smart glasses are reminiscent of the popular Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Both devices utilize Qualcomm chips, with Samsung's version slightly edging out in weight compared to the Ray-Ban glasses. However, the camera and battery capabilities of both devices are quite similar.
One key differentiator between the two could be the AI technology utilized. While Meta's glasses offer live translation features, Samsung's glasses are expected to leverage Google Gemini for tasks such as payment with QR code recognition, gesture recognition, and human recognition functions.
Partnership and Development
The collaboration between Google, Qualcomm, and Samsung on this project was originally announced back in February 2023. Although initial expectations pointed towards a 2024 release, delays in development have pushed the launch to 2025. The partnership aims to deliver cutting-edge XR (Extended Reality) experiences to consumers.
Furthermore, recent discoveries of a Samsung patent hint at the tech giant's exploration of both VR/AR headsets and smart glasses, potentially offering users a range of immersive experiences.
Future of Samsung's XR Devices
While Samsung's XR device plans have seen some shifts in response to market dynamics, the company remains committed to delivering innovative wearable technology. The upcoming CES event in January could provide a glimpse into Samsung's XR roadmap, with potential teasers during the Samsung Galaxy S25 launch event.
Similar to the strategy employed for the Galaxy Ring launch, Samsung may unveil its smart glasses amidst a buzz of anticipation, setting the stage for a new era of wearable technology from the Korean tech giant.
