Altman, the CEO of OpenAI — the company behind ChatGPT — may soon have to balance fatherhood with saving humanity from artificial intelligence, according to a new profile from New York Magazine. Altman told the publication that he and his boyfriend, Oliver Mulherin, want to have kids soon.
Private Life and Family
Altman, who grew up as the oldest of four siblings in a "middle-class Jewish family," expressed his fondness for big families. He prefers to keep his relationship with his partner Mulherin — whom he calls Ollie — fairly private. The couple resides together in San Francisco during the work week and spends weekends at a private ranch in Napa, California.
Professional and Personal Ventures
Altman brought Mulherin with him to a White House dinner in late June, in honor of Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India. Tech leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook were also in attendance. Mulherin, an Australian programmer, has shown interest in AI, particularly during his time at the University of Melbourne where he worked on AI projects related to language detection and games.
Before Mulherin, Altman was in a nine-year relationship with Nick Sivo, with whom he founded Loopt, a start-up focused on geolocation software. Altman even shared that he was working so intensely on Loopt that he developed scurvy at one point! The couple parted ways in 2012 after selling the company.
