Sam Altman Returns To OpenAI 11/22/2023
After several days of drama, OpenAI announced that Sam Altman will be returning as the CEO to lead the company he helped build through advancements in AI. The new board will be chaired by former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor.
Altman expressed his dedication to OpenAI by stating, "I love OpenAI, and everything I've done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together." He further mentioned, "When I decided to join Microsoft, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team."
Other notable members on the board now include Larry Summers, the former U.S. Treasury Secretary, and Adam D’Angelo, the CEO of Quora. The agreement also includes plans for an independent investigation into the events that led to Altman's original ousting.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft and a major investor in OpenAI, expressed optimism about the changes in the board. He stated, "We are encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board. We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance."
Despite initial plans for Altman and Greg Brockman to join Microsoft's new AI division, their return to OpenAI raises questions about the future of the division at Microsoft. Issues such as the hiring of an interim CEO, like Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear, remain unresolved.
During the tumultuous period, OpenAI employees were approached by other companies for potential job opportunities. Salesforce Founder Marc Benioff even offered to match the offers made to OpenAI engineers who were considering resigning, inviting them to join Salesforce Einstein Trusted AI research team.
Overall, Altman's return to OpenAI marks a significant development in the company's leadership and strategy, with a renewed focus on advancing the field of artificial intelligence.
