Robot Dog Spot Can Now Talk Thanks to ChatGPT!

Boston Dynamics' robot dog Spot has integrated ChatGPT, allowing users to talk to the machine. The integration of generative AI and quadrupedal robot was shaped by the hands of an engineer named Santiago, who builds machine learning systems. Santiago tweeted a video showing how and why ChatGPT was integrated into Spot.

Users can now ask Spot questions about past and upcoming tasks, which the robot can respond to in real-time using the Google text-to-speech feature. ChatGPT interprets the question, parses the files, and formulates a response. The reason behind the integration is to simplify the reporting of robots and their work. Robots like Spot perform automated tasks every day, and they collect data as a result of these tasks. Therefore, simple reporting of this data is possible thanks to ChatGPT.

Meanwhile, Spot can also nod to answer yes or no questions. Integrating ChatGPT or other productive AIs into robots will always pose a question mark and concern but this feature is certainly on the "cute" side.

Recently, the New York Police Department deployed Spot robots. Perhaps such an integration would be useful for security forces. In other recent ChatGPT news, OpenAI shows that it spends hundreds of thousands of dollars every day to keep the chatbot up and running.
