Google is introducing AI-powered contextual search in Google Photos, its cloud-based photo backup solution. This new feature is designed to enhance the search experience within Google Photos through the use of AI technology.
Google's Gemini AI models drive the new 'Ask Photos' search functionality in Google Photos. Users can leverage this feature to search their Google Photos library using tagged faces and natural keywords such as dogs, cats, cars, and more. The goal is to further enhance the search experience by incorporating AI capabilities.

According to Google's blog post on The Keyword, Ask Photos is capable of understanding the context of your photo gallery. This feature enables users to pose questions like "What were the top things I saw during my last vacation?" in a conversational manner, allowing for refined search results based on additional details provided by the user.
Moreover, Ask Photos can also offer suggestions, such as highlighting the best photos from a birthday album or surfacing pictures of specific food items within the photo library. The rollout of Ask Photos in Google Photos is currently underway in the U.S. through Google Labs, requiring interested users to join a waitlist to access the feature.
Enhancements to Search Feature
In addition to Ask Photos, Google is enhancing the regular search feature in Google Photos. Users can now utilize natural and descriptive keywords to search for images in their library, such as "me in the mountains" or "me with a dog." This update is being rolled out to all Google Photos users on iOS and Android in English, with plans for further expansion to additional languages in the near future.
Apple Photos already offers a similar search functionality, allowing users to search their photo library by faces, pets, text, content, or date. With the upcoming release of iOS 18's Photos app, Apple will also introduce support for natural language search, enabling users to quickly locate photos based on terms like "Me in Singapore." However, Google's implementation of Ask Photos appears to be more advanced and sophisticated.
