Google Search now comes with AI Mode, powered by Gemini - Now...
Over the past decade or two, Google Search has been the go-to tool for satisfying curiosity, efficiently gathering information from across the web. However, in recent years, AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini have gained popularity by answering complex questions in a conversational manner, even when users struggle to articulate their queries.
Despite the rise of chatbots, traditional search engines like Google remain more reliable for up-to-date and accurate information. Chatbots may sometimes provide outdated responses unless directed to search the web. The integration of Gemini AI into Google Search would provide a solution to this issue.
Introduction of AI Mode in Google Search
At the 2025 I/O conference, Google announced the launch of a new AI Mode in Search, powered by Gemini. Currently, this feature is available exclusively in the US, with plans for an international market rollout in the future.
Prior to the introduction of AI Mode, Google had implemented the AI Overviews function in its search engine in 2023, leading to a significant increase in Google usage.
Features of AI Mode in Search
AI Mode in Search is powered by Gemini 2.5 large language model (LLM), enabling it to handle longer and more complex queries. Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, stated that AI Mode can address queries that are two to three times the length of traditional searches.
The AI Mode utilizes a query-fan-out technique to break down questions into subtopics and issue multiple queries simultaneously, allowing for more in-depth exploration of the web compared to regular searches on Google.
Activation and Features
Users can find and activate AI Mode on Google Search or the search bar within the Google app. The feature is officially available with no Google Labs sign-up required.
AI Overviews is also receiving the Gemini 2.5 LLM in the US, with plans for international expansion soon. Google is working on additional features for AI Mode, including Deep Search and integration with Project Mariner.
Future Developments
In the testing phase are features like Deep Search, which can issue hundreds of searches, reason across disparate information, and create fully-cited reports quickly. Project Astra will also bring improvements to AI Mode, enhancing shopping experiences and interactions with Search Live.
With Project Astra, users can engage in real-time conversations with Search using their camera, expanding the capabilities of AI Mode. The AI Mode Shopping Experience, utilizing Gemini and Google's Shopping Graph, will facilitate online shopping and virtual "try on" experiences for users in the US.
US users can access these features through Google Labs, while international users will have to wait for their release.
