CMIMI: ChatGPT 'reasonably' accurate for identifying chest x-ray terms
Research presented at the Conference on Machine Intelligence in Medical Imaging (CMIMI) suggests that ChatGPT-4 demonstrates reasonable accuracy in identifying radiological terms on chest x-ray reports. A team led by Jad Alsheikh from Creighton University found that while the large language model can handle variations in terminology, its performance may vary for less common terms. The team shared their findings in a poster presentation at the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) conference.
Potential of ChatGPT-4 in Radiology
The study emphasizes the potential of GPT-4 in improving patient comprehension of radiological reports by providing a dependable database of terms. Researchers are exploring how large language models like ChatGPT can aid in generating medical reports, potentially freeing up radiologists' time for other tasks such as patient consultations and imaging exams. This automation could be particularly helpful in simplifying technical language for patients.
Evaluation of ChatGPT-4 Accuracy
Alsheikh and colleagues evaluated ChatGPT-4's accuracy in identifying common radiological terms from chest x-ray reports. They compiled two lists of the top 40 common findings and phrases, with one list from reports in the National Library of Medicine's Open-i service and the other generated by GPT-4 itself.
The team found that GPT-4 could accurately recognize common terms such as pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, and pneumothorax. The model demonstrated a moderate overlap with the reports, as indicated by its precision, recall, and F1 score. The Spearman's rank correlation and chi-squared analysis also highlighted significant correlations between the terms identified by GPT-4 and those in the actual reports.
Enhancing Patient Communication in Radiology
The researchers concluded that integrating AI tools like ChatGPT could enhance patient communication and engagement in radiology, potentially leading to improved healthcare outcomes.
