Google is looking to add AI replies to its Call Screening feature for Android 12 users
Google is exploring the possibility of incorporating "AI replies" into its call-screening functionality, which is currently accessible to Android 12 users. A recent report from 9to5Google indicates that a snippet of code within the official Google Phone app hints at the introduction of a feature that would enable users to reply to incoming calls using "new AI-powered smart replies."
Enhancing Call Screen Replies with AI Technology
At present, the Contextual Call Screen replies are already integrated into the app. This functionality allows users to avoid answering calls directly, as they can opt for Google Assistant to interact with the caller using a customized audio response. Initially, the Google Assistant will inquire about the caller's identity and purpose of the call. For instance, if the call pertains to an appointment, Google will display tailored responses like 'Confirm' or 'Cancel appointment' for the user to choose from.

It seems that Google is now looking to build upon the existing call-screening feature by leveraging AI technology to suggest responses that align better with the context of the call. In the past, Google had expressed its intent to enhance the effectiveness of the call-screening feature through the use of a "multi-step, multi-turn conversational AI" approach.
Utilizing Gemini Nano AI Model
Reports suggest that the AI replies feature might be powered by Google's Gemini Nano AI model. A month ago, the company unveiled a new capability that enables Gemini to manage phone calls and messages even when the device is locked. This functionality allows Gemini to respond even in scenarios where the caller remains silent.
