OpenAI's ChatGPT back up after brief outage
MICROSOFT-backed OpenAI's popular chatbot ChatGPT was successfully restored after an outage that impacted thousands of users, the company confirmed on Friday (Nov 8).
In an official statement on its website, OpenAI announced, "Issues with ChatGPT have now been resolved." Users regained access to the service by 4.34pm PT (0034 GMT on Saturday), with only a small number experiencing lingering issues until 5pm (0100 GMT on Saturday).
CEO's Response
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X to address the incident, revealing that ChatGPT had been offline for a period of 30 minutes. Altman expressed the sentiment with a frown emoji, acknowledging, "We are much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work ahead of us."
Impact and Recovery
According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, ChatGPT's services were disrupted for approximately half an hour, affecting over 19,403 users as of 7.13pm ET (0013 GMT on Saturday).
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has garnered a significant user base, boasting 250 million weekly active users. This surge in popularity has not gone unnoticed, with OpenAI's valuation skyrocketing to US$157 billion from US$14 billion in 2021. Revenues have also seen a remarkable increase, climbing to US$3.6 billion from zero, surpassing Altman's initial projections.
