OpenAI, backed by Microsoft (MSFT, Financials), has introduced an upgraded web search function within ChatGPT, now offering responses that link directly to verified sources, the company said Thursday.

According to OpenAI, the new feature—available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users—integrates real-time information on stocks, weather, sports, news, and maps via relationships with other data sources. With a staggered release to all free users slated for the future, OpenAI said, enterprise and education customers should have access to this tool in the next weeks.

OpenAI claimed the revised functionality lets ChatGPT access real-time data from the web and respond to inquiries using natural, conversational English. According to OpenAI, the function permits follow-up questions and is meant to modify answers depending on the general background of the discussion.

Partnerships with Leading Media Outlets

Working with a variety of media partners, including the Associated Press, Financial Times, and other significant sources, OpenAI stated it supports original content producers and news organizations. This integration maintains openness about source credit, gives publishers more visibility, and connects to source information, Open AI observed.

Future Enhancements

Plans for more enhancements surround the service, which is already available via ChatGPT's desktop and mobile apps. Future developments, OpenAI said, may incorporate Advanced Voice and Canvas features to increase accessibility across a range of user requirements.
