OpenAI in Talks to Acquire AI Coding Startup Windsurf for $3 Billion
OpenAI is reportedly in talks to acquire the AI coding startup Windsurf for a whopping $3 billion. This potential acquisition would see Codeium, the company behind the popular AI coding assistant tool Windsurf, being bought by OpenAI, as reported by Bloomberg.
Competition in the AI Coding Assistant Space
If the deal goes through, OpenAI would enter into direct competition with other AI coding assistant providers such as Anysphere, the creator of Cursor. OpenAI had previously backed Anysphere from its OpenAI Startup Fund, making the acquisition of Windsurf a significant move in the AI coding landscape.
The acquisition discussions have raised concerns about the credibility of the OpenAI Startup Fund, especially since Cursor, one of the companies in which OpenAI has invested, could potentially face challenges with OpenAI's acquisition of a competitor.

Users of Windsurf recently received an email notifying them of an upcoming announcement and offering them the option to secure access to the coding editor at a monthly rate of $10. Codeium, founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, has been in talks to raise funds with a valuation of $2.85 billion. While the company has achieved an annualized recurring revenue of about $40 million, it lags behind Cursor, which reportedly generates $200 million in ARR and has been in discussions to raise capital at a $10 billion valuation.
