OpenAI says ChatGPT back online following global outage
OpenAI has announced that it has resolved an issue that caused millions of users worldwide to lose access to ChatGPT and the recently released AI video generator Sora.
Outage Identified and Fixed
The company acknowledged the incident with a tweet, stating, "We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix." The outage lasted for over four hours, during which OpenAI's services, including its API for software developers, were unavailable.
Restoration of Services
Recovery efforts for the AI chatbot and video generation model commenced before 10 p.m., with all services reported as "fully operational" by 10:38 p.m. OpenAI reassured users by stating, "ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but we’ve recovered," early Thursday morning.
Apple Integration and Outage
The outage occurred shortly after the integration of the AI chatbot with Apple’s latest operating systems. While the correlation between the two events remains unconfirmed by OpenAI, the timing raised questions about a potential connection.
Industry Outages
This incident follows a recent widespread outage affecting users of Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta-owned platforms. The back-to-back disruptions highlight the vulnerability of digital services to technical challenges.
