OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other leaders of artificial intelligence (AI) technology companies will meet with members of the U.S. Senate Thursday to testify about the future of AI and its potential impact on the country and world.
Senate Testimony
Altman, along with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) CEO and Chair Lisa Su, CoreWeave CEO and co-founder Michael Intrator, and Microsoft Corporation Vice Chair and President Brad Smith, will testify before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation at 10 a.m. ET.
"The way to beat China in the AI race is to outrace them in innovation, not saddle AI developers with European-style regulations. Growth and development of new AI technologies will bolster our national security, create new jobs, and stimulate economic growth," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who chairs the committee, said.
The Stargate Project
Altman is leading the Stargate Project, a $500 billion investment in new AI infrastructure in the U.S. The project aims to secure America’s position as the leader in AI, create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the U.S., and generate economic benefits globally.

FOX Business obtained excerpts of Altman’s testimony where he discussed significant advances in AI that will be seen in the coming years. He mentioned the release of AI-powered tools in 2025 that can handle complex software engineering tasks and AI agents capable of real-world activities like scheduling doctor’s appointments and assisting in business operations.
The Future of AI
Altman projected that AI could lead to scientific breakthroughs in various fields such as climate, health, and national security. By 2027, AI-powered robotics may enhance productivity by automating routine tasks, allowing individuals to focus on more engaging activities.
The evolution of AI has progressed significantly since OpenAI's co-founder Greg Brockman's testimony in 2016. Altman expressed confidence in reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI) milestones during President Trump’s term in office.

Challenges and Opportunities
Altman emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of AGI advancements, highlighting the need for transparency and risk management strategies. He stated that the benefits of AGI will outweigh the risks significantly, contributing to scientific progress and human advancement.
Altman envisioned a future where AI drives progress in what he termed "the Intelligence Age," emphasizing the need for a democratic and transparent approach to AI development to outshine authoritarian models.
Conclusion
The hearing with the Senate Committee reflects the pivotal role of AI in shaping the future economy and society. Altman's vision for AI underscores the transformative potential of this technology while emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and responsible innovation in AI development.
