Microsoft is removing legacy drivers from Windows Update - Neowin

Last month, Microsoft announced significant changes to the development of hardware drivers in Windows, including the retirement of Windows Metadata and Internet Services (WMIS) and the process for pre-production driver signing. Now, the tech giant is taking another step by removing old drivers from Windows Update.

Strategic Move for Better Security

Microsoft described this cleanup of legacy drivers through Windows Update as a strategic move to enhance the security posture and compatibility of Windows. The first phase targets drivers that already have modern replacements available in Windows Update. Partners have been informed of this initiative to improve the overall driver quality.

Expiration of Legacy Drivers

As part of the cleanup process, Microsoft will expire legacy drivers to prevent them from being offered to any system. The expiration will involve removing audience segments in the Hardware Development Center. Partners have the option to republish a driver labeled as legacy, but Microsoft may require justification. After the initial cleanup phase, partners will have a six-month grace period to address any concerns. If no concerns are raised, the drivers will be permanently removed from Windows Update.

Regular Cleanup Process

Microsoft has emphasized that this cleanup will be a regular activity going forward. While the current phase targets legacy drivers with newer replacements, future phases may expand to remove other drivers. The company commits to transparency by informing partners of each cleanup phase.

Enhanced Security and Compatibility

Microsoft anticipates that this initiative will enhance the security posture of Windows by offering an optimized set of drivers to end-users. Partners are encouraged to review their drivers in the Hardware Program to avoid any unexpected issues during the cleanup process.
