Meta's Pioneering Efforts in AI Translation with UNESCO

Meta and UNESCO team up to improve translation AI

Meta has joined forces with UNESCO on a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing translation and speech recognition AI technology. According to a report by Techcrunch, this collaboration is part of Meta's Language Technology Partner Program, which is actively seeking partners willing to contribute a minimum of 10 hours of speech recordings along with transcriptions, substantial written texts comprising 200 sentences or more, and collections of translated sentences.

Supporting Underserved Languages

The primary focus of this partnership is to address the needs of underrepresented languages, aligning with the objectives of UNESCO. Meta's dedication to this cause is evident in their recent blog post where they highlighted their commitment to supporting UNESCO's efforts. An early success of this collaboration is the engagement with the government of Nunavut, a region in northern Canada, to develop translation systems for the local Inuit languages - Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun.
