Meta Will Use AI to Place Teens Into Stricter Account Settings
Meta is expanding its age-verification tools by utilizing AI to identify teenaged users and automatically assign them to more restricted Teen Account settings, regardless of the age provided during registration. According to the company's blog post on Monday, accounts suspected to belong to teens will be proactively flagged and transitioned to these stricter settings. While the system may occasionally err, users retain the option to revert to their previous settings if necessary.
Enhanced Online Safety Measures
Meta disclosed that it has been employing artificial intelligence for age verification for some time, marking a significant change in its application. This initiative forms part of a larger endeavor by Meta and other social media platforms to enhance protections for young users in response to mounting concerns from parents and legislators regarding the insufficient precautions taken by tech firms to ensure the well-being and mental health of teenagers.
Instagram's Teen Accounts feature, which debuted last year, incorporates predefined security measures that restrict interactions, control content exposure, and manage screen time for teenage users. The platform automatically activated these safety protocols for all teenage users last year, stipulating that individuals below 16 years of age necessitate parental or guardian approval for any alterations.
About 97% of users under 16 have retained these safeguards. Meta has also extended the Teen Account functionality to Facebook and Messenger platforms. The company plans to notify parents on Instagram, underscoring the importance of discussing accurate age disclosure with their teens.
Addressing Industry-Wide Challenges
Meta acknowledges the complexity of verifying users' ages in the digital realm as an industry-wide dilemma. The company affirmed its commitment to ensuring that teens are placed in age-appropriate digital environments like Teen Accounts, emphasizing the significance of parental consent and age verification on app platforms as the most reliable methods.
While some entities commend such age verification mechanisms, critics like Devorah Heitner, author of "Growing Up in Public," have raised concerns about the privacy implications, deeming the invasive nature of AI algorithms and potential for harassment "alarming." Heitner advocates for social apps to prioritize safeguarding all users from intrusive technology and abuse, rather than fixating solely on age-gating strategies.
