Meta to integrate third-party services with WhatsApp and Messenger for interoperability
In compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Meta is making significant updates to WhatsApp and Messenger to enable interoperability with third-party messaging services. The company has revealed its plans to introduce new features, such as group messaging in 2025 and calling capabilities by 2027.
Meta has announced its intentions to allow third-party services on WhatsApp and Messenger for users within the European Union. This will enable users to merge messages from third-party chats into their inbox or keep them separate. These changes are being made in accordance with the DMA to enhance the functionality of WhatsApp and Messenger with third-party services.
Enhanced User Experience
Meta is committed to building new features to improve user experience, with upcoming developments in group messaging and calling functionalities. Users in Europe will have the option to connect with individuals using third-party messaging platforms that have opted for interoperability with WhatsApp and Messenger.
With the introduction of third-party chats, Meta has incorporated new notifications within WhatsApp and Messenger to keep users informed. Through a simple onboarding process, users can explore the concept of third-party chats and activate the feature as per their preferences.
Customizable Inbox Management
Users will have the flexibility to select the third-party apps from which they wish to receive messages and manage their inbox settings accordingly. Whether they prefer a separate folder for third-party messages or a combined inbox for all messages, Meta ensures that users can easily customize their messaging experience.
Furthermore, Meta will provide advanced messaging features like reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts to enhance communication within the integrated platforms. These additions align with the requirements of the DMA, with group creation functionality slated for 2025 and voice/video calling options expected by 2027.
Users retain the autonomy to modify their settings at any time, reflecting Meta's commitment to user control and seamless communication across diverse messaging platforms.
