Meta To Start Training Its AI Model With User Data In EU Regions ...
Social media company Meta announced on Monday that it will resume using publicly available content from European users to train its artificial intelligence models. This decision comes after a pause last year due to concerns raised by activists regarding data privacy.
Training Using Public Posts and Comments
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, revealed that it will utilize public posts and comments from adult users in the European Union to train its AI systems. Additionally, interactions such as questions and queries with Meta AI will also contribute to enhancing the AI models.
The move follows the recent launch of Meta AI assistant for European users, after its introduction in the United States and other key markets.
Compliance with EU Data Privacy Laws
The company had faced obstacles in its AI training efforts due to the strict data privacy regulations in the European Union. Notably, these laws empower individuals to control the usage of their personal information. Activist Max Schrems-led group NOYB had raised objections against Meta's AI training plans, prompting national privacy watchdogs to review the situation.
However, in December, a panel of EU privacy regulators affirmed that Meta’s approach adhered to legal requirements.
Commitment to User Privacy
Meta emphasized that it will not utilize private messages for training its AI model. The company highlighted that it is following the precedents set by industry peers like Google and OpenAI, who have previously leveraged data from European users for AI model training.
As part of its transparency efforts, Meta will inform EU users about the AI training process and provide a link to a form where objections can be raised at any time. The company assured users that all objections will be respected.
