Meta's head of AI research, Joelle Pineau announces departure
Meta Platforms Inc. faces a significant leadership gap in its artificial intelligence (AI) division as Joelle Pineau, Vice President of AI Research and head of the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, announced her departure after eight years with the company.
Pineau, who also serves as a computer science professor at McGill University, will remain at Meta until May before stepping down to “observe and reflect.”
In a note to colleagues shared on her Facebook page, Pineau stated: "Today, as the world undergoes significant change, as the race for AI accelerates, and as Meta prepares for its next chapter, it is time to create space for others to pursue the work."
She expressed confidence in the team’s ability to continue innovating: "I will be cheering from the sidelines, knowing that you have all the ingredients needed to build the best AI systems in the world, and to responsibly bring them into the lives of billions of people."
Contributions to Meta's Ecosystem
During her tenure, Pineau led the FAIR team in developing several groundbreaking AI projects that have become integral to Meta’s ecosystem. These include PyTorch, FAISS, Roberta, Dino, Llama, SAM, Codegen, and Audiobox—technologies widely used across Meta’s platforms and beyond.
She highlighted the team’s impact, noting that Meta’s AI research has reached millions of researchers, entrepreneurs, and students worldwide:
"I have so much affection and appreciation for my close team, the FAIR Leads, all the FAIR researchers, our cross-function partners, and many close collaborators. You have been there every day of this journey, trying to reinvent the world with me by charting a path for the future of AI," she wrote.
Advancements in AI Capabilities
Pineau’s FAIR team has played a crucial role in advancing Meta’s AI capabilities, particularly in voice translation, image recognition, and the development of AI systems with human-like reasoning.
Her exit comes at a critical time as Meta intensifies its AI investments to compete with industry rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has prioritized AI development, committing up to $65 billion to related projects this year.
Meta is also positioning its open-source large language model, Llama, as an industry standard, with plans to integrate AI chatbots across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, aiming to reach 1 billion users.
Continued Commitment to AI Research
While the company has yet to name a successor, a search is underway. Last year, Meta restructured its AI teams to better integrate FAIR with product development, seeking to accelerate AI deployment.
A company spokesperson reassured that Pineau’s departure would not impact Meta’s AI strategy:
"Meta remains committed to AI research, and our plans remain unchanged."
