The company later discontinued its celebrity AI characters in July 2024 and introduced AI Studio, allowing users to create and share their own AI characters on Meta's social media platforms.

Despite the initial lack of attention towards Meta's AI characters, an interview with Meta's vice president of generative AI products in the Financial Times sparked increased interest in the AI profiles.

One particular AI character named 'Liv,' created as a 'proud black queer mom,' gained significant attention after a conversation screenshot was shared on Bluesky by Karen Atia.

Concerns regarding diversity, representation, and authenticity of the AI characters were raised across various platforms, prompting Meta to take action.

Although Meta has removed its AI characters, user-generated AI chatbots still remain on the platform.
