Meta recently unveiled its latest AI range, the new Llama models, after a brief delay. The company introduced three models in this lineup: Llama 4 Maverick, Llama 4 Scout, and Llama 4 Behemoth. However, only two of these models are currently available for purchase.

Competition with Google's Offerings
Meta's new AI models directly compete with Google's existing offerings. For instance, Meta claims that Llama 4 Maverick surpasses Gemini 2.0 in various aspects such as coding, reasoning, multilingual capabilities, long context, and image benchmarks. Similarly, Llama 4 Scout is positioned to outperform Gemini 2.0 Flash Lite and Gemma 3 models. 
Future Models and Ambitions
In addition to the current models, Meta's upcoming releases, including Llama Behemoth and Llama Reasoning, will further intensify the competition with Google's offerings. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed the company's ambitions for the Llama 4 models in a video on Instagram, highlighting the goal to create leading AI technology that is open-source and universally accessible.

Llama 4 Maverick boasts 17 billion active parameters and 128 experts, positioning it as a versatile model suitable for general assistant and chat use cases. Meta touts Maverick as an ideal choice for tasks requiring precise image understanding and creative writing capabilities.
On the other hand, Llama 4 Scout features 17 billion active parameters, 16 experts, and 109 billion total parameters. Despite its smaller size, this model excels at tasks like document summarization and reasoning over code bases.
