Meta has made several AI-related announcements today, including the release of its biggest open-source AI model to date. Meta AI, the company’s intelligent assistant in WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, is now available in 22 countries with the addition of Cameroon and six Latin American countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru) today. If Meta AI still isn’t available in the EU, it’s still also adding support for new languages including French, German, Hindi, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Expanding Language Support

Speaking with the Financial Times, Rob Sherman, Meta’s deputy privacy officer and vice-president of policy said that the EU’s privacy watchdog has requested the company to pause the training of its future AI models on data from EU users.

With new Meta AI Creative tools, users in the US can now try a new “Image me” prompt to create images of themselves in any situation or location. Meta is also upgrading its image creation tools with new editing capabilities, and it’s also rolling out the ability to create images with Meta AI right within feed, stories, comments, and messages across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. This will roll out first to English-speaking users.

Enhanced Features

After bringing Meta AI to Ray-Ban smart glasses, Meta is bringing its generative AI system to Meta Quest headsets in the US and Canada next month as an experimental feature. “Meta AI will replace the current Voice Commands on Quest, allowing you to control your headset hands-free, get answers to questions, stay up to date with real-time information, check the weather and more,” the company explained. “You can also use Meta AI with Vision in Passthrough to ask questions about things you see in your physical surroundings.”

Starting today, Meta is also inviting Meta AI users to try Llama 3.1 405B, the company’s “largest and most advanced open-source model.” The company says that Llama 405B “rivals the top AI models when it comes to state-of-the-art capabilities in general knowledge, steerability, math, tool use, and multilingual translation.” Llama 3.1 405B is currently available on WhatsApp and at meta.ai in the US.
