Meta Platforms' AI assistant, Meta AI, has quickly gained popularity since its launch less than a year ago. As reported by The Information, the assistant has now amassed an impressive 400 million monthly active users, with 40 million using it on a daily basis as of early August.
Integration Across Meta's Ecosystem
These numbers underscore Meta's advantage in utilizing its vast user base of over 3 billion people across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Meta has seamlessly integrated Meta AI into its apps' search functionalities, its innovative Ray-Ban smart glasses, and even introduced a dedicated website to encourage wider adoption.
Usage Challenges and Growth
While the user metrics are certainly impressive, they have also sparked discussions about the nature of usage. Some users have raised concerns about Meta's aggressive promotion of the assistant, leading to internal deliberations about unintentional engagements.
Connor Hayes, Meta's VP of product for generative AI, recognizes the learning curve associated with Meta AI, stating, "People are still learning how to use Meta AI. They might come across it while browsing Facebook or opt to interact with it on WhatsApp."
It's noteworthy that the 10% daily to monthly user ratio for Meta AI is significantly lower than the 80% ratio reported for Meta's primary apps in February. This disparity indicates that while many users are exposed to the AI, fewer are actively using it on a regular basis.
Competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT
Despite these challenges, Meta AI's rapid expansion positions it as a formidable rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which recently disclosed a user base of over 200 million weekly users.
