Meet the Chinese AI Chatbot Startups: A Factbox

Chinese Firms Working on ChatGPT-style AI Technology: Factbox

China has also joined the global conversation on artificial intelligence (AI) technology following the hype on Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT. This has led to several Chinese companies announcing their plans to create similar tools. Here are some of the companies:

iFlytek

On May 6, iFlytek (002230.SZ) unveiled its language model "SparkDesk" and showcased its capacity to produce texts, solve math problems, and analyze handwritten essays. iFlytek plans to upgrade the model this year to exceed ChatGPT's understanding of Chinese and match its proficiency in English.

Alibaba Group

On April 11, Alibaba Group (9988.HK) displayed its AI language model called Tongyi Qianwen. The model will soon be available in all of Alibaba's apps and will initially be integrated into their workplace messaging app, DingTalk, and voice assistant, Tmall Genie. Registrations began on April 7.

SenseTime

In April, SenseTime (0020.HK) introduced its AI-based products, including a chatbot and image generator that use its SenseNova model. SenseTime has yet to disclose its plans for launching products using these models.

Huawei Technologies

Telecoms giant Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) has developed the Pangu series, which includes AI models used in drug development and computer vision.

Baidu Inc

Baidu Inc (9888.HK) recently launched its chatbot called Ernie Bot, which is available to a limited number of users who apply for access codes. The chatbot has great command of the Chinese language but avoids answering some political questions. Baidu aims to use Ernie Bot to innovate its search engine, particularly in efficiency for its cloud, smart cars, and household appliances businesses.

Tencent Holdings

Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) is developing its ChatGPT-like chatbot called "HunyuanAide," which is currently undergoing research and development.

Fudan University

A team from Fudan University launched ChatGPT-like MOSS on Feb. 20, but it crashed due to a surge in traffic, indicating that the tool is still in its premature stage.

JD.Com

JD.Com (9618.HK) plans to launch its product ChatJD, which aims to serve other businesses.

China Telecom Corp

China Telecom Corp (0728.HK) is developing an industrial version of ChatGPT for telecoms to enhance its customer service.

NetEase

Gaming firm NetEase (9999.HK) plans to deploy large language models technology to serve its education business, primarily AI customer service.

360 Security Technology Inc

360 Security Technology Inc (601360.SS) has language model technology, but it hasn't shown any indication of when it will launch related products yet.

Kuaishou Technology

The short video app Kuaishou Technology (1024.HK) is currently researching large language models to enhance its products, such as AI customer service.

These companies' efforts show China's desire to become a major player in AI technology, and we can expect more announcements in the future.
