Google's AI model used to erase watermarks from images, raising concerns
Google’s Gemini AI model is reportedly being utilized to remove watermarks from images, even as the tech giant aims to simplify the labeling of AI-generated content. Users on X and Reddit have highlighted that Gemini 2.0 Flash can effectively eliminate watermarks from images sourced from Getty Images and other popular stock media platforms.
The experimental image generation feature of Gemini 2.0 Flash has been noted to exhibit superior watermark removal capabilities compared to other AI tools, as per a report by TechCrunch. Apart from watermark removal from existing photos, the model's text-to-image generation aspect seems to have fewer restrictions, allowing the creation of images portraying celebrities and other copyrighted content.
Lack of Usage Restrictions
The purported absence of usage restrictions and the removal of watermarks without consent could potentially lead to legal actions by copyright holders. The image generation feature of Gemini 2.0 Flash was recently expanded for experimental purposes only, emphasizing that it is not meant for production use.
Currently, access to this feature is limited to the Google AI studio, the platform where Google hosts its AI developer tools. In a related development, Google DeepMind made SynthID Text available for public use in 2024. This tool is used to watermark AI-generated text and was later integrated into the Google Photos app to mark AI-manipulated images.
Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity
The Google, as an Alphabet-owned company, is a member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), along with other tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Adobe. The C2PA has developed technical standards to track the origin of AI-generated images through metadata detailing creation dates and the AI tools used.
However, the group faces challenges related to adoption and interoperability. Meanwhile, in India, Zepto, a rapid commerce platform, has announced swift deliveries of select Apple phones and accessories in under 10 minutes due to high demand. Customers can order through the Zepto app, with the company planning to expand its product range.
