Hassidic Rabbi Releases 'Kosher' AI Chatbot Alternative to ChatGPT
After a ban on artificial intelligence by a group of rabbis from Skver Hasidic movement citing OpenAI, Rabbi Moishy Goldstein, a hassidic Jew, has created an AI chatbot called Kosher.Chat. This chatbot is a safer platform that adheres to Jewish Law and values.
Kosher.Chat works similarly to other AI-powered chats, but its answers are based on Halacha and are more appropriate for Orthodox Jews. Goldstein, a music producer and educator, created the chatbot in response to a friend's suggestion after reading the ban on AI issued by the Skver Rabbinic Court.
Kosher.Chat is not designed to answer complex Torah questions or serve as a spokesperson for Torah's opinion. Instead, it is meant to answer mundane questions through a Jewish filter to prevent the answers from opposing Torah values. The chatbot encourages feedback from users to improve the model further.
The chatbot's answers differ significantly from other AI-powered chatbots. When asked what the term “queer” means, Kosher.Chat's response is “the term ‘queer’ is often used to refer to individuals who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. However, it is important to note that Judaism does not condone or support same-sex relationships and considers them a violation of Torah law.”
Kosher.Chat avoids answering specific questions about the personal lives of individuals within the ultra-Orthodox community, including their sexual orientation or gender identity. It emphasizes that it is a violation of Torah values and Jewish law.
When asking who the most influential rabbis are nowadays, Kosher.Chat doesn't get into the topic, stating that it is not appropriate to rank or compare rabbis in terms of influence. Each rabbi has their unique teachings and contributions to the Jewish community.
Kosher.Chat also keeps kosher, and therefore its answers adhere to Jewish dietary laws. It encourages users to recite the Birkat Hamazon, the grace after meals.
The knowledgebase of Kosher.Chat includes whatever the base OpenAI model knows from its training, plus any additional information that Rabbi Moishy Goldstein trains it with, based on feedback from users.
