Probes Reveal Depth of Big Tech Complicity in Israel's AI-Driven Warfare in Gaza
Many nations are looking to Israel and its use of AI in Gaza with admiration and jealousy. Expect to see a form of Google, Microsoft, and Amazon-backed AI in other war zones soon.
Several recent journalistic investigations have deepened the understanding of how Israeli forces are using artificial intelligence and cloud computing systems sold by U.S. tech titans for the mass surveillance and killing of Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel's Utilization of Tech Giants' AI
The Associated Press found that Israel's use of Microsoft and OpenAI technology "skyrocketed" following Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
Israel buys advanced AI models from OpenAI and Microsoft's Azure cloud platform. While OpenAI stated no partnership with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the company quietly removed language from its usage policy that prohibited military use of its technology in early 2024.
Furthermore, Google and Amazon provide cloud computing and AI services to the IDF via Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract signed in 2021. The IDF also utilizes services from Cisco, Dell, Red Hat, and Palantir Technologies.
Google's Involvement
Google, despite its commitments, removed from its Responsible AI principles a clause preventing the use of AI for the development of harmful technology. The company has faced backlash for its involvement with the IDF and Israel's Ministry of Defense.
A Google employee warned that failure to provide certain technology could lead the military to seek alternatives, potentially from competitors like Amazon, which also works with Israel under the Nimbus contract.
AI's Impact on Warfare
The implications of utilizing commercial AI models in warfare are significant, raising concerns about the role of technology in enabling unethical and unlawful practices.
Previous investigations have shown how the IDF's use of AI has transformed its operations, leading to a significant increase in the volume of targets and airstrikes, resulting in civilian casualties.
Mass Surveillance Concerns
Massive amounts of data are being collected about Palestinian life in the region, raising fears about privacy and surveillance. This data collection extends to various aspects of daily life, creating a database akin to those seen in authoritarian regimes.
The collaboration between Big Tech, Israel, and the defense sector signals a concerning trend where technology is leveraged for military purposes with far-reaching consequences.
