After months of anticipation, Samsung has finally unveiled its first extended reality (XR) headset- Project Moohan. “Moohan” means “infinity” in Korean. The device comes in collaboration with Google’s Android XR operating system designed for mixed reality headsets and for augmented reality (AR) glasses. Samsung’s Project Moohan XR headset will offer support for Google’s Gemini AI assistant and will arrive with apps that are calibrated to run on a large, virtual display.

Project Moohan is equipped with advanced displays, Passthrough capabilities, and natural multi-modal input. The XR platform integrates Samsung’s AI expertise, Google’s software ecosystem, and Qualcomm’s hardware capabilities. It supports multimodal interaction, allowing users to engage through voice, gestures, and gaze recognition.

Features and Functionality

The lightweight headset promises seamless XR experiences through applications such as Google Maps, YouTube, alongside third-party content contributions.

Speaking about XR, Won-Joon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business, said: “XR has rapidly evolved from a distant promise to a tangible reality. We are excited to collaborate with Google to reshape the future of XR, starting with Project Moohan.”

Powered by Android XR, the device will have functionalities demonstrated by Google when it unveiled the new operating system. These include the ability to use Circle to Search with gestures, viewing videos and photos on a virtual display using Google TV and Google Photos, or browsing the web using Google Chrome. It will also support features like live translation of text seen in the wearer’s point of view, or the ability to see immersive views of various locations using Google Maps.

Samsung first teased the advent of an XR headset at its first Galaxy Unpacked of 2023 event. At the time, the company mentioned that it was partnering with Google and Qualcomm to develop its first XR headset.

The development marks a major step in creating a unified platform for headsets and smart glasses. Although the company is yet to reveal the price listing of the device, Project Moohan will launch next year, as a competitor to the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3.
