Hugging Face Launches Open-Source ChatGPT Alternative, HuggingChat, for More Inclusivity and Transparency
Hugging Face, a prominent name in open-source AI development, has recently launched an open-source alternative called HuggingChat designed to replace ChatGPT. This user interface allows users to interact with an open-source chat assistant called Open Assistant, organized by LAION, the non-profit that created the data set to train Stable Diffusion. In the future, HuggingChat will allow users to plug in new chat models similar to the AI chatbot clients like Poe. Hugging Face CEO, Clem Delangue, stated that he believes open-source alternatives to ChatGPT will bring more transparency, inclusivity, accountability, and power distribution.
Some are already evaluating the potential of HuggingChat to be the Android App store equivalent, which could enable it to offer more multimodal models. Nonetheless, licensing issues need to be resolved before commercial use is possible. Meta's LLaMA-based HuggingChat model is not licensed for commercial use, so a truly open version of HuggingChat is required. Even so, Hugging Face is pleased with this newly-launched app, emphasizing the importance of open source AI development. In the future, Hugging Face intends to support the next-generation, rapidly-improving open-source models. For now, the company is working with version 0, which provides a limited interface but is iterating quickly on safety mechanisms and the interface.
