Greek woman files for divorce based on ChatGPT coffee cup interpretation

A recent divorce case in Greece has garnered attention after a husband was accused of infidelity based on an AI interpretation of a coffee cup reading. The husband dismissed the AI-prompted accusation as “baseless nonsense,” leading to a potential legal battle over the validity of the claims.

Marriage Conflict: Talking as Teammates

The husband revealed that the incident began with a seemingly innocent request from his wife to ChatGPT, asking the AI to interpret the remnants of their Greek coffee cups. To his surprise, the AI allegedly 'saw' a young woman with the initial ‘E’ in his cup, insinuating that he was intensely thinking about her and that a relationship with her was imminent. Additionally, the AI's interpretation concluded that he was cheating on his wife with a young woman who sought to end their marriage.

Despite the husband's insistence that the accusations were unfounded, his wife reportedly took the AI's response seriously. Following the AI's revelation, the wife asked the husband to leave their home and initiated divorce proceedings through her lawyer.

The Legal Battle

The couple, who have been married for 12 years and have two young children, are now facing a potential legal battle over custody arrangements. The husband's lawyer hinted at a countersuit, emphasizing the lack of concrete evidence to support the affair allegation.

The husband pointed out that this was not the first time his wife's decisions were influenced by unsupported claims, recalling a previous instance where she consulted an astrologer during a family crisis. The husband's legal representative emphasized that artificial intelligence cannot serve as admissible evidence in court and stressed his client's innocence until proven guilty.

Addressing the media, the lawyer, Fivos Strougaris, suggested that the wife's belief in the infidelity may have been reinforced by the AI's response, providing her with the validation she was seeking.

As the case unfolds, the role of AI in personal relationships and legal disputes is being brought to the forefront, raising questions about the reliance on artificial intelligence for matters as sensitive as marriage and divorce.
