OpenAI is reportedly gearing up to release a more powerful version of ChatGPT in the coming months. The new AI model, known as GPT-5, is slated to arrive as soon as this summer, according to sources in the know who spoke to Business Insider.
What is ChatGPT 5?
Ahead of its launch, some businesses have reportedly tried out a demo of the tool, allowing them to test its upgraded abilities. GPT-5 is the follow-up to GPT-4, OpenAI’s fourth-generation chatbot that requires a monthly fee to use.
GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer, an AI engine built and refined by OpenAI to power different versions of ChatGPT. Each new edition of the chatbot runs on a brand new GPT with more capabilities.
In the case of GPT-4, the AI chatbot can provide human-like responses, recognize and generate images and speech. Its successor, GPT-5, will reportedly offer better personalization, make fewer mistakes, handle more types of content, and even include video eventually.
Training and Development of GPT-5
The latest report claims OpenAI has begun training GPT-5 as it prepares for the AI model’s release in the middle of this year. Once training is complete, the system will undergo multiple stages of safety testing, according to Business Insider. The bot will be "red teamed," a technique involving internal and external testers putting it through its paces and providing feedback on its strengths and weaknesses.
In January, one of the tech firm’s leading researchers hinted that OpenAI was training a much larger GPU than normal, suggesting progress in the development of GPT-5.

Mr. Altman, the OpenAI chief, has emphasized that GPT-5 will be smarter than its predecessors, requiring more data to train on. The plan includes using publicly available data sets from the internet and large-scale proprietary data sets from organizations. The latter would involve long-form writing or conversations in any format.
Speaking about the advancements, Mr. Altman highlighted the importance of multimodality, reasoning ability, and reliability in GPT-5 compared to GPT-4.
Both OpenAI and several researchers have tested the chatbot on real-life exams, showing promising results in various assessments.
At present, OpenAI has not announced a specific launch date for GPT-5, leaving enthusiasts and businesses eager for its arrival.
