Google will integrate Gemini AI into Volvo cars
Google is bringing its Gemini AI to Volvo cars as part of a new partnership between Google parent Alphabet and the Swedish carmaker. The collaboration, announced at Google's annual I/O developer conference, will see Volvo's vehicles serving as the lead development partner for Google's AI division. This move marks an expansion of the existing partnership between the two companies.
Currently, Volvo vehicles utilize Google Assistant on Android 13. However, upcoming models of the EX90 electric SUV are set to run on Android 15 with Gemini later this year. Volvo cars will be the first to receive subsequent iterations of the technology before it becomes available to other automakers.
Traditionally, the auto industry lags two years behind in adopting current operating systems, making mobile phones more up to date than vehicles. The integration of Gemini AI aims to bridge this gap, enabling engineers to evaluate the product in a real-world context much earlier and faster than before.
Benefits for Drivers
Alwin Bakkenes, head of software engineering at Volvo, highlighted that the integration of Gemini AI will enhance the driving experience by eliminating the need for drivers to check their phones while on the road. The AI technology will offer features such as searching emails or messages for destinations, providing translations, navigational tools, and access to the user manual. These features are designed to reduce the cognitive load on drivers, allowing them to focus more on the task of driving.
While some of these functionalities may resemble standard Assistant features, Gemini AI distinguishes itself by offering a more natural conversational experience, thereby reducing the need for specific prompts.
Future Developments
At the I/O conference, Google also announced an AI shopping feature that allows online consumers to virtually try on outfits, leveraging AI to understand body types and clothing nuances. Additionally, new features for augmented-reality smart glasses, Android XR, were unveiled, although the product is not yet commercially available.
This partnership between Google and Volvo signifies a significant step towards integrating advanced AI technologies into everyday driving experiences and reflects the ongoing evolution of the automotive industry towards a more connected and intelligent future.
