Google has made a significant move by eliminating the $20 monthly fee for AI features on its Workspace products. The tech giant recently announced that subscribers to its Workspace Business and Enterprise plans will now have access to Gemini, its artificial intelligence (AI) model, without any additional cost.

Free AI Features for Workspace Subscribers

In a blog post, Google stated, "With this change, we are no longer offering the Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, AI Meetings & Messaging, and AI Security add-ons for purchase." The introduction of Gemini aims to alleviate the burden of mundane tasks such as note-taking during meetings and synthesizing lengthy documents. Additionally, Gemini serves as a strategic thought partner, assisting in idea development and problem-solving.

Despite waiving the AI add-on fees, Google revealed an increase in prices for its Workspace Business and Enterprise plans, effective January 16. Existing customers with affected Google Workspace Enterprise and Business plans or a Gemini for Workspace add-on subscription will receive detailed information regarding the price adjustments and subscription updates via email.

Businesses Embracing Generative AI

The shift comes as companies are progressively leveraging generative AI (GenAI) to perform various tasks, as indicated by surveys of chief operating officers (COOs) conducted by PYMNTS Intelligence. The customization of GenAI plays a crucial role in maximizing its efficiency.

According to a PYMNTS report, COOs are optimistic about achieving significant returns on investment through GenAI by the end of the decade. They perceive GenAI as a fundamental driver of future accomplishments, employing it in essential operations like production feedback and cybersecurity management.

In August of the previous year, 57% of COOs utilized GenAI for production monitoring, a significant surge from 32% three months earlier. Similarly, the utilization of GenAI for automated cybersecurity systems surged from 17% to 55% during the same period, underscoring its increasing reliability in managing complex systems and safeguarding companies against cyber threats.

Besides managing high-impact functions, COOs rely on GenAI for tasks like data visualizations, workflow management, and routine automation. The percentage of COOs utilizing GenAI for visualizations rose from 53% to 67% between May and August, emphasizing its role in enhancing operational efficiency across various departments.
