European Union regulators are currently investigating Google's artificial intelligence model, known as PaLM2, due to concerns about its compliance with the strict data privacy rules within the EU. The inquiry is being led by Ireland's Data Protection Commission, which has opened an investigation into PaLM2 to determine how this AI system handles personal data.
Understanding PaLM2 and its Role
PaLM2 is a large language model that serves as a significant source of data used in various artificial intelligence systems. Google utilizes PaLM2 to power generative AI services, such as email summarization and other applications. Despite the inquiry, Google has not provided any comments regarding the investigation.

Earlier this month, the Irish watchdog reached an agreement with Elon Musk's social media platform X to cease processing user data for its AI chatbot Grok, following legal action. Similarly, Meta Platforms also paused its plans to use content from European users to train their latest large language model version after discussions with the Irish regulators.
Regulatory Actions in Europe
Italy's data privacy regulator previously imposed a temporary ban on ChatGPT due to privacy breaches, requiring the chatbot's developer, OpenAI, to address specific demands in order to resolve the issues.
As the regulatory scrutiny on AI systems and data privacy intensifies across Europe, companies like Google, Meta Platforms, and OpenAI are facing increasing pressure to ensure compliance with the stringent regulations set forth by the EU.
